Should I Quit My Job? 12 Questions to Ask Before You Decide

Almost everyone wonders at some point whether it is time to walk away. Sometimes quitting is exactly the right call. Sometimes it is a reaction to a rough stretch that would pass. The hard part is telling the difference while you are tired, frustrated or both.

Before you decide, slow down and answer these twelve questions honestly. Write the answers down. Patterns show up on paper that you will miss in your head.

Questions about the job itself

  1. Is the problem the work, the people, or the company?
  2. Has this feeling lasted months, or did it start after one bad week?
  3. If your biggest frustration were fixed tomorrow, would you want to stay?
  4. Have you told anyone who could change it what is wrong?

If one fixable problem is driving most of your frustration, a direct conversation may solve more than a resignation letter. If the issue runs through the whole company, that tells you something different.

Questions about you

  1. Are you running toward something, or only away from something?
  2. Would the same problems follow you to a new job?
  3. Are you burned out in a way that a real break could help?
  4. What are you good at that this role does not let you use?

This is the part people skip. If you are exhausted, almost any job will feel wrong. And if you have not named what you want next, the next job can end up looking a lot like this one.

Questions about timing and money

  1. How many months could you cover your expenses without a paycheck?
  2. Is there a better time to leave, such as after a bonus, a project or a busy season?
  3. Have you looked at what is actually out there, not just what you imagine?
  4. Who else is affected by this decision, and have you talked with them?

What your answers are telling you

If most of your answers point to fixable problems, try fixing them first: have the conversation, ask for the change, take the break. If most of your answers point to a deeper mismatch, start planning your exit on your terms instead of in a moment of frustration.

Either way, you do not have to sort it out alone. Talking it through with someone outside the situation can save you from staying too long or leaving too fast.
